Why I Love “Breakfast at Tiffany’s”

Holly Golightly, if only we lived in the same world, and believe me I’d gladly transport myself to 1960, we would become the best of friends! Audrey Hepburn set my standards pretty high when it comes to dressing to go out – I mean this is a woman who dressed up in pearls, a luxurious Givenchy black dress, full gloves, and a tiara just for breakfast! And remember that amazing wide brimmed hat with the incredible ribbon she wears to “give the weather report” to her mobster friend Sally Tomato at Sing Sing?

I love Breakfast at Tiffany’s for a very simple reason – Audrey Hepburn and the way she lived her life. The fact is that Holly Golightly didn’t let others take control of her life – she lived it just as she pleased – tassel earplugs and all! (get yours here!) She tested social norms by not naming her cat, believing that it didn’t belong to her as a pet but that it had its own life to live and it wasn’t her place to get in the way of that. She wasn’t afraid to share her outspoken viewpoints with anyone.

She tested social norms in ever aspect, even her taste in furniture – she had a bathtub for a couch! (Want one too? Found on Etsy here!)

Moreover, she dressed the way she wanted  to and didn’t allow either event nor locations dictate her wardrobe. She knew what she loved and went for it. Just having that kind of courage is rare, no matter what era you live in. Just check out her pj’s: a tuxedo shirt, Tiffany blue eye mask with embroidered eyes (eyelashes and all! get yours here!), and don’t forget her signature tasseled earplugs. Speaking strictly fashion, I have to say that I first fell in love with the classic LBD and pearl combo when introduced to Breakfast at Tiffany’s by my HS best friend, Vicki, in our sophomore year. (Thank you!!!)

As the popular vote goes, my favorite outfit is definitely her debuting black dress with full length gloves, tortoise shell sunglasses, sparkling tiara, and of course the pearls upon pearls. Next up is her orange coat with the dark fur hat she wears out on the town with her friend “Fred” the gigolo, played by George Peppard. Weren’t they a pair? Her playing the part of Manhattan high society girlfriend to the top of citys’ men, him spending time with the friendliest of women in the city, swearing not to fall in love with anyone but only in it for the benefits of a wealthy life. And by the end of it all, (SPOILER ALERT!) they are embracing in a rainy alleyway sharing moments of a re-examined life and looking as if they have found true love. Aren’t their matching trench coats just adorable? And so timeless!

If I remember correctly, I do believe they crossed even when they weren’t supposed to – love her spirt of individualism! (Get coat here)

Now I’m not too sure about you, but I definitely let event details, locations, and social pressures get to me, and yes, I’ll admit, I allow them to dictate my choice of clothing. That’s not cool – I don’t want to keep living like that. Do you ever feel this way? I’m betting you do…I encourage you to watch Breakfast at Tiffany’s and become empowered by Holly to be the woman you are, and take control of your life in all ways. I’m taking a step forward to stop being controlled by the social acceptance of who to be and what to wear to specific events, locations, and what people expect you to be clothed in. I know what I like and I’m going to wear it, furthermore, I know who I am and I’m going to be the best possible version of myself, no one else. Won’t you join me in taking a stand? It’s important to me that I am able to live life to the fullest, so why not follow in a great woman’s footsteps – believe me, Audrey Hepburn’s just the kind of woman I want to be.

Sweet – Confident – Strong.

xo, Kate

Hey guys! I recently joined forces with Style Owner to curate a cute shop. It’s just launched and we’ve filled it with super cute items for summer. We have a wide range of brands and items offered, including: Ray-Ban, House of Harlow 1960, Bobbi Brown, Alternative Apparel, Chloe, Juicy Couture, Milly, French Connection, Splendid, Blaque Label, and many more! I’ve varied the brands and prices so that there’s something for everyone – including you! Many of the brands have discounted items you can only find in our shop – so get ‘em while they’re hot! Here’s a couple of my favorite pieces in shop now:

Elbow Patch Sweater in Flax
$141.00 USD
Daftbird

This is something I would totally recommend for those late night beach walks and bonfires that always seem to fill my summers. Living in Southern California it’s not always your first option to “throw a sweater on” for summer time, but if you’re going to spend the evening outdoors, it’s not a bad idea. And it’s certainly a cute one in this case!

1X1 Tank in Many Colors
$38.00 USD
Splendid

Basic white tank – Every woman needs one. And not just in white, I suggest having black, grey, and navy as well. Adding in some bits of color are a great idea too! My personal favorites to add would be red, hot pink, and turquoise. Good thing Splendid has them all!

Lacy Layers String Tie Bikini Bottom
$28.99 USD (was $58!)
Juicy Couture

I’m a fan of both one piece and two piece swimwear. Personally, I only like wearing bikinis and this is the one I’m really in love with this season! Ruffles on top are a fun style to play with! (hint: wearing ruffled tops creates the illusion of a larger breast size) Pairing a frilly top with basic bottoms are a sure way to balance out an outfit.

Lace Tank Top
$34.00 USD (was $85!)
7 for all mankind

Now this is the kind of bargain I’m talking about! 7 for all Mankind has partnered with us to slash prices to give you high end apparel at affordable price points.

Surrender Tank in Leopard
$94.00 USD
One Teaspoon

Rawr! My favorite print in the entire world is animal print! This little leopard tank top is sure to bring out a new side of you! The cut is modest yet sexy because it still shows off your skin without having a plunging neckline.

Heather & I @ Steak n' Cakes (I'm wearing h&m boyfriend fit buttonup & target fedora with chanel earrings)

The first weekend in March, Heather Petrey of LaFashionSnob.com and I woke up super early, jumped in our car, and drove 6 hours to see Caroline Monick, a French women’s wear designer, launch and show her first collection at Phoenix Fashion Week. We didn’t really plan too much of the trip, other than going to the show at MIM (Music Instrument Museum in Phoenix, AZ). So we were excited to just enjoy the adventure!

On our way out to Phoenix, we stopped in a little town just short of the California/Arizona border for some lunch. Heather had read about this little ma & pa diner called “Steak & Cakes”. To me, right away I’m like ‘heck yea let’s go there…..steak annnnndcakes? okay!’ Once we got there I realized my appetite was sorely overestimated. I ended up order just a grilled cheese and fries. [Gallery not found]

Nonetheless I enjoyed my little snack of a meal very much. The thing that stood out most to me about this joint was the service. I go to ma and pop places hoping to get away from crowds, to support real people instead of just a corporation, and in hopes of great service from people who know what it is to work hard and make a name for themselves. I was very happy to be greeted by a waitress who seemed genuinely interested in every customer she served. At one point I even saw her sit down with an older gentleman, who after hearing their conversation, I presume is a ‘regular’. I love that! I look forward to visiting again when we go out in the fall for the full Phoenix Fashion Week.

Channeling my 'MAD MEN' Betty Draper look with vintage scarf and string of pearls :)

For me wearing vintage accessories is a lot easier to pull off than wearing an entire vintage outfit…or a large vintage piece. I feel that sometimes when people wear all vintage they can look ‘costume-y’…for me that just doesn’t work! But I still love classic vintage pieces. For instance, I constantly wear my simple string of pearls…

(with just about everything I own actually!) Now a single strand of pearls will always be in style – I feel that way about more vintage accessories actually. Even though the cut of a 70′s dress may not be in style every year, you can always find a way for a big floppy hat to work.

Here’s some of my favorite vintage pieces you can wear over and over again through the years:

1970s Dexter Flats / Kiltie Fringe Shoes / Auburn Leather / 8.5 9: $46

Vintage Bow Tie / 1950s / Yellow Print Silk: $16

Little Heart Necklace : Mustard Yellow Vintage Charm Necklace, Valentines Day Gift, Women Accessories, Heart Jewelry : $35

Olive Green Vintage Leather Manicure Case Wallet Clutch Purse Bag Organizer Grass Spring Natural $25

Bonny verde wayfarer Vintage Sunglasses: $39

Vintage 1980s Belt - Red Hot Abstract Angle Wrap Belt - 27 Inch Waist: $28

Vintage Ballerina Scarf - Teal Blue Ballet Design Scarf - Silk Like: $28
