Why I Love “Breakfast at Tiffany’s”

Holly Golightly, if only we lived in the same world, and believe me I’d gladly transport myself to 1960, we would become the best of friends! Audrey Hepburn set my standards pretty high when it comes to dressing to go out – I mean this is a woman who dressed up in pearls, a luxurious Givenchy black dress, full gloves, and a tiara just for breakfast! And remember that amazing wide brimmed hat with the incredible ribbon she wears to “give the weather report” to her mobster friend Sally Tomato at Sing Sing?

I love Breakfast at Tiffany’s for a very simple reason – Audrey Hepburn and the way she lived her life. The fact is that Holly Golightly didn’t let others take control of her life – she lived it just as she pleased – tassel earplugs and all! (get yours here!) She tested social norms by not naming her cat, believing that it didn’t belong to her as a pet but that it had its own life to live and it wasn’t her place to get in the way of that. She wasn’t afraid to share her outspoken viewpoints with anyone.

She tested social norms in ever aspect, even her taste in furniture – she had a bathtub for a couch! (Want one too? Found on Etsy here!)

Moreover, she dressed the way she wanted  to and didn’t allow either event nor locations dictate her wardrobe. She knew what she loved and went for it. Just having that kind of courage is rare, no matter what era you live in. Just check out her pj’s: a tuxedo shirt, Tiffany blue eye mask with embroidered eyes (eyelashes and all! get yours here!), and don’t forget her signature tasseled earplugs. Speaking strictly fashion, I have to say that I first fell in love with the classic LBD and pearl combo when introduced to Breakfast at Tiffany’s by my HS best friend, Vicki, in our sophomore year. (Thank you!!!)

As the popular vote goes, my favorite outfit is definitely her debuting black dress with full length gloves, tortoise shell sunglasses, sparkling tiara, and of course the pearls upon pearls. Next up is her orange coat with the dark fur hat she wears out on the town with her friend “Fred” the gigolo, played by George Peppard. Weren’t they a pair? Her playing the part of Manhattan high society girlfriend to the top of citys’ men, him spending time with the friendliest of women in the city, swearing not to fall in love with anyone but only in it for the benefits of a wealthy life. And by the end of it all, (SPOILER ALERT!) they are embracing in a rainy alleyway sharing moments of a re-examined life and looking as if they have found true love. Aren’t their matching trench coats just adorable? And so timeless!

If I remember correctly, I do believe they crossed even when they weren’t supposed to – love her spirt of individualism! (Get coat here)

Now I’m not too sure about you, but I definitely let event details, locations, and social pressures get to me, and yes, I’ll admit, I allow them to dictate my choice of clothing. That’s not cool – I don’t want to keep living like that. Do you ever feel this way? I’m betting you do…I encourage you to watch Breakfast at Tiffany’s and become empowered by Holly to be the woman you are, and take control of your life in all ways. I’m taking a step forward to stop being controlled by the social acceptance of who to be and what to wear to specific events, locations, and what people expect you to be clothed in. I know what I like and I’m going to wear it, furthermore, I know who I am and I’m going to be the best possible version of myself, no one else. Won’t you join me in taking a stand? It’s important to me that I am able to live life to the fullest, so why not follow in a great woman’s footsteps – believe me, Audrey Hepburn’s just the kind of woman I want to be.

Sweet – Confident – Strong.

xo, Kate

Betsey Johnson’s Fall ’12 Collection & Cartwheel

The one and only blonde-as-can-be Betsey Johnson wowed the scene at New York Fashion Week with her incredible collection of colorful vintage inspired garments. Not that it should come as a surprise – 69 year old Betsey Johnson has long been a favorite of the fashion world, with her career spanning nearly four decades! This Fall 2012 collection featured a wide variety of eye popping pinks, reds, and oranges transformed into lots of floppy hats, 60′s-esque shift dresses, and even bold pink and black striped pant suit. The soundtrack to her show was one of the most eclectic and nostalgic of combinations widely featuring remixes of a great many Beatle’s tunes. Per tradition, the incredibly enthusiastic designer graces us with one of her bi-annual cartwheel-split duos.

Some of my favorite pieces included:

This look of the tweed pant, chic military-esque coat with lots of shiny button detail, and accessorized with red gloves translates into what I imagine would be the London girl version of the Beatles – classy yet totally edgy. I’d rock it.

If you haven’t been able to tell yet, I love wearing black – so this entire outfit can just walk it’s way into my closet; right now! This comfy looking sweater has got just the right way of fitting her without swallowing her – and the added lines of the tights create a tall look, something us short girls always enjoy! (P.S. 5’5″ is short yes/no?)

I’m incredibly in love with the combo of hot pink and bright orange! (Even more I love that I already own hot pink tights and just got a pair of 5.5″ of Jessica Simpson shoes that would go great with almost any of Betsey Johnson’s Fall collection.) With multicolored plaid and large fur cuffs and collar, this coat creates an entire outfit alone – there’s just so many ways to wear it!

The intricate beading on the bodice of this top is incredible! It compliments the leopard coat in a way that only sparkles can! This coat is one of those timeless pieces that can be worn sexy (like here!) or dropped down to a more modest tone (add simple black heels instead of boots, and a less flashy top – perhaps a scoop neck ruffled blouse). You will notice this model is wearing large earrings….I think it was Neimann Marcus, they sent me an email about the trend of the ‘statement earrings’…so large gold earrings are IN.

The ultimate Party/Prom dress of the season – sequined v-neck sleeveless top with a full bouncy tulle tutu skirt and silk bow belt. Not only that but check out those shoes! I’m forever in love with leopard print shoes – flats are practical for most, so I’m looking forward to finding out where I can get my hands on these puppies!

Metallics were a trend we saw coming in early last year (think back to Spring/Summer ’11 collections)….I’m happy to report it’s going to stay around for a while longer, at leassst one more season!!! YAY! Sticking with the tights, Betsey Johnson knows how to make a woman’s legs look great – this time in white. Pairing it with the white leather jacket and hot pink turtleneck, this look is super 70′s!

Now this is bordering on 80′s style with the hot pink pinstripe separates suit. I’m the kind of girl that adores a good tailored piece, to have this jacket structured so well that it can fit different body type while still creating it’s own shape for the outfit and even more to have it paired with the form fitted skinny pant makes me so happy! And of course the fitted cap just creates a casual yet sophisticated look.

I love this fabric…it’s hard to tell though if this outfit is a one piece jumper or if it’s separates of a top and fitted pant. Either way, I love it! The coat reminds me of this amazing fur coat I tried on at an event on Rodeo Drive at Versace…(Oh I should post those pics!!!!) P.S. have you seen those super cute peep toe pumps with the pink and red band at the toes?? I NEED those! haha!

PERFECT Cartwheel!

Since seeing Paula Patton on last night’s Golden Globes Awards red carpet in a daringly bright yellow gown it has inspired me to style and enter this outfit into Polyvore.com‘s latest contest Polyvore Live:

My tribute to Dana-Maxx

This outfit makes me smile so big! It’s bright, it’s young, it’s fresh, and it’s sophisticated! I am really excited about this contest because it allows me to enter into winning a trip to New York Fashion Week! The Polyvore Live event will take place on February 13th in New York City during IMG Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. Each Polyvore Live designer will have up to 10 looks from their collection modeled by top bloggers during a full-scale runway show. How cool would it be to be one of their top bloggers? Perhaps one day I will be! :D The designers showing will be: Lauren Bagliore, Vengsarkar Budhu, Sergio Guadarrama, and Dana-Maxx Pomerantz; all Fashion Institute of Technology alumni. How great of an event?! Even if I don’t win, which of course I want to with all my heart, we’ll all be able to watch the show live on webcast here: http://www.polyvore.com/cgi/live it’ll be on Monday February 13th, 6:30 PM EST.

Cheers and wish me good luck! :) xo Kate

Why I’m excited about Jason Wu:

1. He knows how to dress a woman in the sheerest of fabrics and still keep them looking modest

2: The use of small pops of colors in this line makes his pieces more versatile

3: He built his label starting from scratch as an unknown designer from Taiwan

4: Many of his unusual patterns come from his watercolor art skills

5: One of his favorite clients is Leighton Meester – Blair Waldorf in Gossip Girl (one of my FAVORITES!)
