Channeling my 'MAD MEN' Betty Draper look with vintage scarf and string of pearls :)

For me wearing vintage accessories is a lot easier to pull off than wearing an entire vintage outfit…or a large vintage piece. I feel that sometimes when people wear all vintage they can look ‘costume-y’…for me that just doesn’t work! But I still love classic vintage pieces. For instance, I constantly wear my simple string of pearls…

(with just about everything I own actually!) Now a single strand of pearls will always be in style – I feel that way about more vintage accessories actually. Even though the cut of a 70′s dress may not be in style every year, you can always find a way for a big floppy hat to work.

Here’s some of my favorite vintage pieces you can wear over and over again through the years:

1970s Dexter Flats / Kiltie Fringe Shoes / Auburn Leather / 8.5 9: $46

Vintage Bow Tie / 1950s / Yellow Print Silk: $16

Little Heart Necklace : Mustard Yellow Vintage Charm Necklace, Valentines Day Gift, Women Accessories, Heart Jewelry : $35

Olive Green Vintage Leather Manicure Case Wallet Clutch Purse Bag Organizer Grass Spring Natural $25

Bonny verde wayfarer Vintage Sunglasses: $39

Vintage 1980s Belt - Red Hot Abstract Angle Wrap Belt - 27 Inch Waist: $28

Vintage Ballerina Scarf - Teal Blue Ballet Design Scarf - Silk Like: $28

Fashion can be illustrated in a many multitude of ways – of course we always think that wearing clothes every day is how we illustrate our personal fashion sense. (and yes it may seem to be easiest for most of us!) But we often forget or even overlook the true art of fashion. Fashion as art can be found in runway shows, fashion art installments or exhibits, photographs, and even hand drawn illustrations.

"Fused - Fashion Illustration Art Print" by Leigh Viner - CLICK TO VIEW MORE.

Runway shows are always fun to go to because it means you get to dress up too! It’s all about who’s wearing what and how. Seeing new collections and being able to mingle at the after parties with the models and designers is always fun, but the shows are always over SO fast.

I recently went to my first fashion art installment. I was expecting a fashion show (classic crowd and runway scenario), but it ended up being an installment. It was actually at Versace’s storefront on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills, California. I really enjoyed the event because the models were all standing on pedestals around the shop taking the place of the mannequins. Every 30 minutes they went back and changed one by one and then they walked back out to their posts and presented themselves. The event was actually all about shopping and donating a percentage towards a local charity.  Overall the event was actually quite refreshing. It gave me a lot more time to appreciate the clothes and really inspect the garments and enjoy their careful design and craftsmanship.

Fashion photography and drawn illustrations are some of my most favorite ways to see the blend of the art and fashion industries. It really goes to show just how close the two industries are entwined. I myself am a fashion photographer for Eloquent Woman Magazine (you can click on the side bar to see the website and our latest issue!). Photography is of course my first love when it comes to bringing fashion into art.

So lately, I haven’t been posting – my apologies. I was in Portland for a while, and then in Mexico, and now on Friday I’m off to Colorado to visit my family. Do forgive me! I am back now and ready to get my blog on – that is until I leave Friday morning…haha okay time to play catch-up!

Halloween is near – what?! It’s only 12 days away? Okay yes, we’ve established Halloween is on it’s way and what better way to celebrate than by hosting or attending a costume party? Either way, dressing up is fun! Most costumes are made from phony polyester (remember for you big party people this material is highly flammable!!! lol) In any case, most pre-packaged, store bought, mass produced costumes are unfashionable and don’t always fit right. Well here’s my solution: take what you have in your closet, use it and buy new accessories to make the outfit into a costume.

Here you can see my entry into Polyvore’s contest for creating your own costume from items people might have in their closets are are able to get in other similar fashions from any of their personal favorite designers/brands/shops.

You can see here that you can take anything you have in your closet and create a costume if you add the right accessories/props. Here I added a fun facinator to a simple skirt and blouse to create a grander allusion to the outfit (this makes it more like a costume, but still cute and fashionable!). Also, just in case people couldn’t figure it out on their own, I added a cute cupcake necklace to the mix too – just in case!

You can see more great costume ideas that come from your own closet by previewing the contest entires on Polyvore.com: HERE

Here a couple of my favorite:

Dressing up as Barbie is one of the easiest! Just wear PINK!

Fashionable Minnie Mouse - no need for ears...just wear a big bow!

So, what are you going to be for Halloween?

NY Fashion Week: Chardo Ralph Rucci

Chardo Ralph Rucci’s recent RTW Spring 2012 show in New York blew my mind! Truly his designs were more than fashionable, they were interesting and captured a younger side of his designs. Previous to his Fall 2011 many perceived his collections to be designed for women over 50. Rest assured that with the power he had at his Fall 2011 show back in spring, he continued to blast forward and cultivate his designs to appeal to a younger generation. Here, you can see a couple of his Fall ’11 pieces (my favorites!) that began to appeal to a more youthful client.

A shorter hemline, vintage inspired, and daring over-the-knee boots for the younger than 50 woman.

Another youthful look from Fall 2011 show.

You can see his looks from the Fall 2011 show were more suited for a 20-something year old to an early 40-something year old woman rather than a 50 year old woman. (Well let’s hope, because that second look with the mini skirt and over the knee leather stiletto boots is certainly not something I’d like to see Grandma wearing! Haha!) Let’s take a look at my most favorites from Rucci’s RTW Spring 2012 show in New York now:

Simple elegance with a classy bit of sheer playing peek-a-boo at the sleeves and hemline.

Sparkling sequins my oh my! Love the neckline to be cut so high - leaving the legs to do the talking or rather the walking!

Beautifully constructed - falls in the trend of using sheer materials on top.

Which of these looks were your favorite?
