Color of 2013: Emerald {On the Runway}

Who doesn’t look good in health, wealth, and harmony? Emerald Green is officially Pantone‘s Color of the Year for 2013; and I couldn’t be happier! Just a week before it was announced I was already polishing my nails in the gorgeous gem tone – no better timing than that! It’s apparent that emerald green isn’t just Pantone’s favorite hue this year – designers left and right are picking this color to bring to life their upcoming spring 2013 lines, as you can see from their runway shows back in September. I’ve gathered some of my favorite emerald ensembles from the Spring 2013 runways to inspire and share some designer love. (Designers include: Vera Wang, Burberry, Michael Kors, & Nanette Lepore.)

Exciting collaboration news about one of my favorite designers this month! Kate Spade NY has partnered with Keds to design a line of sneakers in the signature Keds shape featuring Kate Spade prints. Keds are all grown up now and far from the little white shoe standard from my childhood cheerleading stunts – this is exciting!

This cute collaboration will be sold at Kate Spade stores, Nordstrom, and on Nordstrom.com starting February 2013. Lucky for us, the price points will be much lower than the Kate Spade NY designer line. I’ve certainly got my eye on those classic Kate Spade polka dotted and pink pairs! Which are your favorite?

In the meantime, here’s my favorite Kate Spade NY shoes available now… SEE HERE

Why I Love “Breakfast at Tiffany’s”

Holly Golightly, if only we lived in the same world, and believe me I’d gladly transport myself to 1960, we would become the best of friends! Audrey Hepburn set my standards pretty high when it comes to dressing to go out – I mean this is a woman who dressed up in pearls, a luxurious Givenchy black dress, full gloves, and a tiara just for breakfast! And remember that amazing wide brimmed hat with the incredible ribbon she wears to “give the weather report” to her mobster friend Sally Tomato at Sing Sing?

I love Breakfast at Tiffany’s for a very simple reason – Audrey Hepburn and the way she lived her life. The fact is that Holly Golightly didn’t let others take control of her life – she lived it just as she pleased – tassel earplugs and all! (get yours here!) She tested social norms by not naming her cat, believing that it didn’t belong to her as a pet but that it had its own life to live and it wasn’t her place to get in the way of that. She wasn’t afraid to share her outspoken viewpoints with anyone.

She tested social norms in ever aspect, even her taste in furniture – she had a bathtub for a couch! (Want one too? Found on Etsy here!)

Moreover, she dressed the way she wanted  to and didn’t allow either event nor locations dictate her wardrobe. She knew what she loved and went for it. Just having that kind of courage is rare, no matter what era you live in. Just check out her pj’s: a tuxedo shirt, Tiffany blue eye mask with embroidered eyes (eyelashes and all! get yours here!), and don’t forget her signature tasseled earplugs. Speaking strictly fashion, I have to say that I first fell in love with the classic LBD and pearl combo when introduced to Breakfast at Tiffany’s by my HS best friend, Vicki, in our sophomore year. (Thank you!!!)

As the popular vote goes, my favorite outfit is definitely her debuting black dress with full length gloves, tortoise shell sunglasses, sparkling tiara, and of course the pearls upon pearls. Next up is her orange coat with the dark fur hat she wears out on the town with her friend “Fred” the gigolo, played by George Peppard. Weren’t they a pair? Her playing the part of Manhattan high society girlfriend to the top of citys’ men, him spending time with the friendliest of women in the city, swearing not to fall in love with anyone but only in it for the benefits of a wealthy life. And by the end of it all, (SPOILER ALERT!) they are embracing in a rainy alleyway sharing moments of a re-examined life and looking as if they have found true love. Aren’t their matching trench coats just adorable? And so timeless!

If I remember correctly, I do believe they crossed even when they weren’t supposed to – love her spirt of individualism! (Get coat here)

Now I’m not too sure about you, but I definitely let event details, locations, and social pressures get to me, and yes, I’ll admit, I allow them to dictate my choice of clothing. That’s not cool – I don’t want to keep living like that. Do you ever feel this way? I’m betting you do…I encourage you to watch Breakfast at Tiffany’s and become empowered by Holly to be the woman you are, and take control of your life in all ways. I’m taking a step forward to stop being controlled by the social acceptance of who to be and what to wear to specific events, locations, and what people expect you to be clothed in. I know what I like and I’m going to wear it, furthermore, I know who I am and I’m going to be the best possible version of myself, no one else. Won’t you join me in taking a stand? It’s important to me that I am able to live life to the fullest, so why not follow in a great woman’s footsteps – believe me, Audrey Hepburn’s just the kind of woman I want to be.

Sweet – Confident – Strong.

Closet Coveting

Ah to dream! Pinterest is really really good at inspiring my creative side, but very very bad when it comes to making me want to spend a whole month’s salary (or more!!!) on creating some of the glorious things I see! For instance, the closets on Pinterest are incredible, whether they’re sets off movies, or actual closets (ah what a dream!), I’ve yet to come across one that is any less than somehow perfect. And all the incredible clothing…and don’t you dare forget the shoes! I tell you, Pinterest has a love for shoes – or rather those I follow really do (and so do I! You do too? Follow my shoe board: Made for Walkin’) Although I won’t actually spend crazy amounts of money on making my closet looking this fabulous, I will take hints from the style design and implement it at home for a fraction of the cost! I tell you it is nice to dream though, wouldn’t you agree?

Seating is definitely a do for my dream closet!

Don’t tell me you wouldn’t love this to be yours?

This could so be my closet – look at all that black! Feel at home here for sure!

The warmth from this room makes me feel like it’s somewhere I’d like to spend a lot of time in!

Chandelier? Yes please!

What I’d love to have in my dream closet:

- Light and Airy: mostly in white with bits of pink

- Grand sparkling chandelier

- Multiple seating options – maybe a chaise lounge and a comfy chair – this way my friends can spend time with me in there too!

- Bookcase style shoe housing – that’s one I could easily (and cost effectively!) implement now.

- Open space…not too many cabinets or doors to cover up my clothing. Like Carrie in Sex in the City said, “I like my money where I can see it; hanging in my closet.”

- And who could forget all the designer clothes, handbags, oh and shoes!

Thanks Pinterest for all the glorious dream closet photos!

What does your dream closet look like?

Miroslava Duma – International Style Icon

Miroslava Duma poses for a street chic shot!

International style icon, Miroslava Duma, known as Mira by her closest friends, is the ultimate “hot boss”. She is the former Harper’s Bazaar Russia editor and currently freelance writes and collaborates with many brands and magazines like OK, Tatler, and Glamour. Additionally she’s created an amazing style site called Buro 24/7. This Russian native stays close to her roots and created this site to be all in Russian (but there’s lots of pretty pictures – sometimes they really do speak 1,000 words – no matter what language they’re in!) She’s always had a strong following for her personal style, her work as a fashion editor, and now she’s growing it even more with her own site. She’s most commonly photographed on the streets of fashion weeks and in between editor meetings by Mr. Newton, The Sartorialist, or Garance Dore.

Some of Miraslava’s favorite designers include, Miu Miu, YSL, Lanvin, Alexander Wang Chanel, and Prada, although she always stays loyal to her BFF Russian designer Vika Gazinskaya. Her favorite piece to style is a statement making necklace, as she’s shown us that it can be paired with anything and everything. It’s said that her essential beauty tip is hydrating all day with bottles upon bottles of water – so drink up beauties! Here’s my favorite fall inspired looks she’s debuted throughout the years!

Tweed shorts and black tights please!

I’m dying for her Chanel head to toe outfit!

Her style is simply effortless!

Even through her pregnancy she was totally chic!

I love how she pairs so many of her best dresses with tights for fall/winter!

I absolutely love an all black outfit – the sunglasses she’s wearing makes it feel like it could be any decade!

She never really “poses” for her photos but rather is picture perfect in all her outfits – she really is in her own skin at all times it seems!

Capes are a lesser worn winter item, but looks even more chic that a coat, in my opinion!

Houndstooth dress and coat…I wouldn’t normally love the doubling up, but this woman can wear anything.

And of course had to add in a photo of her fashionable designer BFF Vika Gazinskaya!

If there’s only one lesson to learn from Miroslava Duma, international style icon, it’s this: that having the confidence to wear anything will make everything look amazing on you – you just have to go for it! Oh and the second thing you can take from her: wearing dark tights (or sweater tights!) makes it perfectly okay to wear dresses all fall/winter long!

xo, Kate
