Why I Love “Breakfast at Tiffany’s”

Holly Golightly, if only we lived in the same world, and believe me I’d gladly transport myself to 1960, we would become the best of friends! Audrey Hepburn set my standards pretty high when it comes to dressing to go out – I mean this is a woman who dressed up in pearls, a luxurious Givenchy black dress, full gloves, and a tiara just for breakfast! And remember that amazing wide brimmed hat with the incredible ribbon she wears to “give the weather report” to her mobster friend Sally Tomato at Sing Sing?

I love Breakfast at Tiffany’s for a very simple reason – Audrey Hepburn and the way she lived her life. The fact is that Holly Golightly didn’t let others take control of her life – she lived it just as she pleased – tassel earplugs and all! (get yours here!) She tested social norms by not naming her cat, believing that it didn’t belong to her as a pet but that it had its own life to live and it wasn’t her place to get in the way of that. She wasn’t afraid to share her outspoken viewpoints with anyone.

She tested social norms in ever aspect, even her taste in furniture – she had a bathtub for a couch! (Want one too? Found on Etsy here!)

Moreover, she dressed the way she wanted  to and didn’t allow either event nor locations dictate her wardrobe. She knew what she loved and went for it. Just having that kind of courage is rare, no matter what era you live in. Just check out her pj’s: a tuxedo shirt, Tiffany blue eye mask with embroidered eyes (eyelashes and all! get yours here!), and don’t forget her signature tasseled earplugs. Speaking strictly fashion, I have to say that I first fell in love with the classic LBD and pearl combo when introduced to Breakfast at Tiffany’s by my HS best friend, Vicki, in our sophomore year. (Thank you!!!)

As the popular vote goes, my favorite outfit is definitely her debuting black dress with full length gloves, tortoise shell sunglasses, sparkling tiara, and of course the pearls upon pearls. Next up is her orange coat with the dark fur hat she wears out on the town with her friend “Fred” the gigolo, played by George Peppard. Weren’t they a pair? Her playing the part of Manhattan high society girlfriend to the top of citys’ men, him spending time with the friendliest of women in the city, swearing not to fall in love with anyone but only in it for the benefits of a wealthy life. And by the end of it all, (SPOILER ALERT!) they are embracing in a rainy alleyway sharing moments of a re-examined life and looking as if they have found true love. Aren’t their matching trench coats just adorable? And so timeless!

If I remember correctly, I do believe they crossed even when they weren’t supposed to – love her spirt of individualism! (Get coat here)

Now I’m not too sure about you, but I definitely let event details, locations, and social pressures get to me, and yes, I’ll admit, I allow them to dictate my choice of clothing. That’s not cool – I don’t want to keep living like that. Do you ever feel this way? I’m betting you do…I encourage you to watch Breakfast at Tiffany’s and become empowered by Holly to be the woman you are, and take control of your life in all ways. I’m taking a step forward to stop being controlled by the social acceptance of who to be and what to wear to specific events, locations, and what people expect you to be clothed in. I know what I like and I’m going to wear it, furthermore, I know who I am and I’m going to be the best possible version of myself, no one else. Won’t you join me in taking a stand? It’s important to me that I am able to live life to the fullest, so why not follow in a great woman’s footsteps – believe me, Audrey Hepburn’s just the kind of woman I want to be.

Sweet – Confident – Strong.

Rooney Mara vs. Audrey Hepburn

Audrey Hepburn and Rooney Mara couldn’t be more different in their choice of character roles, yet there are a distinct characteristics that lead me to believe they are more alike than different. Audrey will forever be known as charming, yet sometimes silly Holly Golightly of Breakfast at Tiffany’s (my favorite movie, btw!) and nobody could ever do her up for that perfectly played iconic role. Of more recent Hollywood films would go, I would say the same about Rooney Mara for her lead role in The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo – she wasn’t much for sweet and charming yet she was completely captivating; and again, I don’t believe anyone could really outdo her riveting performance in the blockbuster movie. The most interesting of ties that I believe binds these strong actresses is their sense of personal style. I see Rooney Mara cultivating an Audrey Hepburn look these days in her red carpet appearances, despite the fact that she runs in a new age and completely different circles  the look has every bit of charm it did for Audrey Hepburn in her day.

Rooney Mara wearing Louis Vuitton

Rooney has taken to the Little Black Dress staple as her go to look and even adopted the shorter than most cropped bangs. These two raven-haired beauties have created a classic look by pairing a unique hair style with a bold red lip against the contrast of flawless porcelain skin and a black dress. They truly are expressing their natural beauty by wearing such a dark color against their light skin – no better way to wear yourself than to simply compliment than to subtly emphasize what you already have! Although Rooney Mara has updated the look a bit by opting at times for more sheer, more sequined, and more sexy in her dressing, she wears Audrey well! I find their natural beauty and facial structure to be quite similar and it’s interesting to be able to see a new kind of Audrey Hepburn woman grace the big screen and the red carpet in today’s world while holding so close to her original look. One of my favorite features of the “new Audrey”, Rooney Mara, is that she has brilliantly blue/grey eyes that stand out more than any of her outfit choices.

Every time I wear a little black dress I find a small connection to Audrey Hepburn and the glory she created in wearing the perfect dress for anything! Both of these women are beautiful, talented, and above all have grace – next time you wear your favorite LBD, know that you’re apart of all their magic too!

Recently I’ve been loving my large statement tassel earrings by LA designer Melissa Velia! (worn above: “At The Opera Earrings” in black) I met her at Project Ethos in Hollywood this year during LA Fashion Week. Her gorgeous spring/summer ’12 line was walking in the show. I wanted to share with you where to get her FAB designs! She has a darling Etsy shop where you can buy up the rest of her Summer line as she makes room for her Fall ’12 designs. Everything is on sale right now – some over 50% off!

I love this Circle high-low skirt with gold nail-head details around the waist. You can find it on sale in her shop for ONLY $25! it was $54.00…This rich color will transition well through this next season and into spring 2013 as well. You can also find the silky sheer tank top with bow front tie in her shop for only $16 (was $28). Local designer garments for such a low price – gotta love it! Also in this photo you can see the model is wearing the “At the Opera” earrings in vintage gold. She makes them in golden yellow, deep maroon, and in signature black. I personally love the black the best, but it’s really the overall design that I love most! They remind me of Audrey Hepburn‘s tassel earplugs in Breakfast at Tiffany’s (my most favorite fashion inspired flick)! Wearing these earrings make me feel so fanciful and royal almost! For only $25 these earrings will add such class to your wardrobe and literally transformed entire outfits in just seconds as they have mine! Check out my blogger friends below wearing Melissa’s earrings:

Banana Republic’s amazing collection inspired by the hit TV show MAD MEN – follows the lives of New York Advertising Agents at Sterling-Cooper-Draper-Price (previously just Sterling-Cooper for seasons 1-3) and their wives. It all takes place in NYC during the 1960′s- one of the most fashionable times for this country, and quite arguably the world!

Many of my most favorite fashion inspirations come from vintage fashions! Jackie O., garden parties in the south, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, and of course now, MAD MEN. I’ve been working on cultivating my Better Draper look- thinking of recruiting my boyfriend to dress up as Don Draper for Halloween this year – Hoping I am able to snag an outfit ON SALE at Banana Republic this weekend from their MAD MEN collection. Check out a couple of pieces they have on sale and my latest take on Betty Draper!
