Don’t you just love getting pampered? I do…especially when it doesn’t require my whole paycheck! Between getting a blowout at The Dry Bar in Pasadena (only $35!) and a mani/pedi combo at Dashing Diva (promise to write a review on them too so you know the inside scoop!), I know how to spoil myself without breaking the bank. The Dry Bar (on Lake Ave. in Pasadena right by Lemonade – some of my favorite yummy eats!) has become one of my favorite little luxuries these days. I am what they call a “BarFly”, someone who frequents the The Bar; I even have a BarTab! (BarTabs at The Dry Bar are basically packages of blowouts that you can buy all at once at a discounted price. (See more on pricing here.) It’s the way to go! It’s an addicting pleasure, so why not set yourself up and save some money while indulging in a little “make me pretty time”!

NICE SHOES welcome mat is my favorite! See inside? It totally looks like a bar!

Such a nice way to be welcomed….with fresh flowers!

Front window display with “Butercup” upsidedown yellow hairdryer “mascot” …be sure to look out for the cute light fixtures made from these inside too!

Day three of a blowout from The Dry Bar…yes if you try to not sleep on your hair it will totally last up to 3 or 4 days depending on if you touch up with a curling iron later! Wearing: Ann Taylor blazer, F21 lace top, Guess jeans, & Charlotte Russe booties.

I have naturally straight, flat hair so getting a blowout totally changes the way I look…and feel! They have a range of different styles to suit any hair type or style preference. Because I have straight hair I go for the big  curly styles like The Cosmo with lots of loose curls and The Mai Tai for fun messy beach waves. My favorite look is a combo between the two called a “Cosmo-Tai!”

Of all the blow out bars I’ve seen and tried I love The Dry Bar because they have the BEST PERKS:

1. They serve you alcohol as if you’re at a real bar! Of course, they specialize in the girly drinks, but hey, it fits! I always order champagne…or a mimosa if I go first thing in the morning. Did I mention it’s free? Yea…no extra charge!

2. Wash is always included! I never feel bad about coming in on day three of not washing my hair because I know they’ll always wash me up before styling at no extra charge! After all, you need wet hair to be blow dried into a style! They use the yummiest smelling products by Moroccan Oil and L’Oreal.

3. There’s always great music playing and a chick flick on the flat screen TV for everyone to see while you get your hair done!

4. Bar Tenders take care of everything for you! If your street parking meter runs out, the super friendly “Bar Tenders” (I love Ryan & Anna!!! follow them on Instagram! @xoxo_ak & @rdmouchet) will run out and take care of it for you! (Be kind and TIP them too, not just the stylist!)

5. Everyone is so friendly! Seriously every stylist I’ve ever been blessed to have do my hair here has been so friendly and interesting to talk with!

The “Need to Know”s:

1. Make an appointment & show up on time! I suggest scheduling an appointment simply because this spot is popular; especially Friday/Saturday. I always book my appointments through the iPhone app “The Dry Bar” because it’s super easy and syncs automatically with my iCal. It’s a super easy way to book/change/cancel your appointments without having to call in every time.

Love the gorgeous dames that line the walls! So inspirational!

2. Length of appointments vary. Although their website says that most blowouts take about 35 minutes, but my hair always take at least an hour and 15 minutes. It all depends on how long and thick your hair is…and how easily it takes to curling or straightening. I suggest leaving some wiggle room and don’t stress yourself out by fitting it into a small window of time. Relax and enjoy yourself!

Ryan - one of my fav. Bar Tenders in Pasadena!

3. Parking in Pasadena…venturing out and about in the city you never know what kind of parking you’re going to have to deal with. Luckily if you’re going to the Pasadena location (which I suggest because all the stylist and bar tenders are amazin’!) you have options! Even though they don’t have a private lot, there is plenty metered street parking on both sides of Lake Ave, but they’re only good for one hour at a time ($1/hr). Do remember, the Bar Tenders will totally feed your meter if you need them to; just be sure to tip them kindly! If you don’t mind walking a small bit (2 minutes really) you can always turn East onto Cordova and park in the huge lot behind Jamba Juice, Chipotle, and Panda Express. Here parking is FREE.

4. Tipping your Stylist/Bar Tender. Since blowouts at The Dry Bar are so reasonably priced ($35 is such an amazing price!) I think it’s perfectly acceptable to tip more than 20%. $10 is a great base to start with (around 28%)…if you absolutely LOOOOVE your hair and really enjoyed talking with your stylist I say pay it forward and tip $15. I also think it’s polite to tip the Bar Tender a few dollars too because they’re running around taking care of your drinks (and maybe even feeding your meter)!

BTW, I totally DIY’ed that key necklace. Found it at my grandpa’s house and decided to add it onto a chain…viola #instachic! #granddadstyle #i’llwearyourgranddad’sclothes My most recent visit to Dry Bar…last weekend! #lovedmystylist Claudia Seriously BEST CURLS ever!

Don’t just take my word for it…see ton’s of reviews here! Can’t wait for you to experience the wonder of The Dry Bar!! Would love to hear about your awesome experiences in the comments! Please do share photos too! Tag me in your instagram posts: @wearinla :)

One girl; four covers. Jessica Chastain, known for her roles in The Tree of Life (2011), The Help (2011), and now a star in Zero Dark Thirty (2012) has officially stolen my heart with her appearance as the cover girl for the January 2013 issue of W Magazine. This issue featured four distinctly different artists and their reprise of Jessica Chastain as a rising beauty and fashion inspiration. {{Artist included: George Condo, Rineke Dijkstra, Chantal Joffe, and Mickalene Thomas. Learn more about their individual styles here.}}

Out of all of the amazing artists that contributed to this 7th annual edition of W Magazine’s “Art Meets Fashion”, George Condo wins my undying love by creating a dress that is an original piece of art in and of itself. He actually fixed the dress to the canvas and then painted right over it to create his piece. When Jessica wore the dress it appeared as if she was “apart of the painting and trying to escape”. Her fiery red hair was the perfect accent to a chalkboard black and classic white chalk etching.

George Condo wasn’t the only artist to play up Jessica’s beautiful pale skin and striking red mane in classic neutrals; Rineke Dijkstra was also keen on featuring her perfect porcelain skin accentuated by her deeply contrasting natural tresses by photographing her only on a light, nondescript background. Pale skinned and fiery haired Jessica Chastain dares you to look away in her soul seekingly beautiful collaboration with artist RINEKE DIJKSTRA.

I love being able to see behind the scene videos of photo shoots, but I especially have an appreciation for the artistic process of a collaborative project like this. SEE THE VIDEO HERE at W Magazine to learn more about the artistic direction and exclusive inside information on the artists and their unique perspective on this incredible collaboration of art and fashion featuring Jessica Chastain.

Which is your favorite take on Jessica’s transforming art meets fashion look?

Thinking About Getting Bangs

Sooooo, I’m thinking about getting bangs. I don’t know though, there’s so many options to choose from: bold, blunt, shorter than average, long enough to be pinned back, light and wispy, side parted. Ah there are just so many options! Before I decide I have some things to consider – I wear glasses, so I don’t want them longer than the top of my glasses I wouldn’t think. I don’t have the thickest of hair, so I probably won’t want to donate a huge bulk of my hair just to bangs, so maybe I’ll go with more of a wispy look. My hair naturally parts on the left side and I’m not sure my new bangs would be able to break that rule very easily…so bangs that can be parted so the side would be a good choice I think.

I used to be so against getting bangs for the fear of looking like a little girl. But what I’ve realized is that when your haircut simply has a chunk of straight across cut bangs they are missing the dimension and flow that make bangs seem more grown up appropriate.

At the end of the day I’d like to try out a new style but be able to ease into it and not go completely shockingly different, just in case I decide it’s not for me after all. As you can see from my photos I do already have bangs technically. But they are long enough to frame my face and easily pull back into my ponytail. I’m really interested in having bangs that fall nicely across my forehead with slightly longer sides to blend into my layered haircut and can be swept to the side.

Be sure to follow my Pinterest board Makeup & Hair for all my latest beauty obsessions. Here are my favorite celebrities with bangs that inspire me to change my look:

Jessica Biel

Reece Witherspoon

Taylor Swift

Zooey Deschanel

Love the Olsen girls!

Scarlet Johansson

Hilary Duff

What do you think – to bang or not to bang?

Why I Love “Breakfast at Tiffany’s”

15 Monday Oct 2012

1960's, 1960's fashion, audrey hepburn, audrey hepburn style, beauty, breakfast at tiffany's, clothing, designer clothing, etsy, Etsy.com, eyemask, fashion, fashion films, George Peppard, Holly Golightly, LBD, little black dress, new york, NYC, pearls, social norms, style, sunglasses, tassel earplugs, tiffany diamonds, tortoise shell, trench coats, vintage, vintage fashion, vintage inspired

Holly Golightly, if only we lived in the same world, and believe me I’d gladly transport myself to 1960, we would become the best of friends! Audrey Hepburn set my standards pretty high when it comes to dressing to go out – I mean this is a woman who dressed up in pearls, a luxurious Givenchy black dress, full gloves, and a tiara just for breakfast! And remember that amazing wide brimmed hat with the incredible ribbon she wears to “give the weather report” to her mobster friend Sally Tomato at Sing Sing?

I love Breakfast at Tiffany’s for a very simple reason – Audrey Hepburn and the way she lived her life. The fact is that Holly Golightly didn’t let others take control of her life – she lived it just as she pleased – tassel earplugs and all! (get yours here!) She tested social norms by not naming her cat, believing that it didn’t belong to her as a pet but that it had its own life to live and it wasn’t her place to get in the way of that. She wasn’t afraid to share her outspoken viewpoints with anyone.

She tested social norms in ever aspect, even her taste in furniture – she had a bathtub for a couch! (Want one too? Found on Etsy here!)

Moreover, she dressed the way she wanted  to and didn’t allow either event nor locations dictate her wardrobe. She knew what she loved and went for it. Just having that kind of courage is rare, no matter what era you live in. Just check out her pj’s: a tuxedo shirt, Tiffany blue eye mask with embroidered eyes (eyelashes and all! get yours here!), and don’t forget her signature tasseled earplugs. Speaking strictly fashion, I have to say that I first fell in love with the classic LBD and pearl combo when introduced to Breakfast at Tiffany’s by my HS best friend, Vicki, in our sophomore year. (Thank you!!!)

As the popular vote goes, my favorite outfit is definitely her debuting black dress with full length gloves, tortoise shell sunglasses, sparkling tiara, and of course the pearls upon pearls. Next up is her orange coat with the dark fur hat she wears out on the town with her friend “Fred” the gigolo, played by George Peppard. Weren’t they a pair? Her playing the part of Manhattan high society girlfriend to the top of citys’ men, him spending time with the friendliest of women in the city, swearing not to fall in love with anyone but only in it for the benefits of a wealthy life. And by the end of it all, (SPOILER ALERT!) they are embracing in a rainy alleyway sharing moments of a re-examined life and looking as if they have found true love. Aren’t their matching trench coats just adorable? And so timeless!

If I remember correctly, I do believe they crossed even when they weren’t supposed to – love her spirt of individualism! (Get coat here)

Now I’m not too sure about you, but I definitely let event details, locations, and social pressures get to me, and yes, I’ll admit, I allow them to dictate my choice of clothing. That’s not cool – I don’t want to keep living like that. Do you ever feel this way? I’m betting you do…I encourage you to watch Breakfast at Tiffany’s and become empowered by Holly to be the woman you are, and take control of your life in all ways. I’m taking a step forward to stop being controlled by the social acceptance of who to be and what to wear to specific events, locations, and what people expect you to be clothed in. I know what I like and I’m going to wear it, furthermore, I know who I am and I’m going to be the best possible version of myself, no one else. Won’t you join me in taking a stand? It’s important to me that I am able to live life to the fullest, so why not follow in a great woman’s footsteps – believe me, Audrey Hepburn’s just the kind of woman I want to be.

Sweet – Confident – Strong.
